“Human economy is already everywhere” (Keith Hart). This symposium will comparatively examine ethnographic cases—including debt and prestige in Muslim societies of southern Thailand, cash-crop cultivation and financial practices in rural Laos, social currencies in urban markets of Burkina Faso, and bridewealth in pastoral societies of Kenya—to explore how human relationships are created, reorganized, and sometimes dissolved within commercial relations, and to reconsider the possibilities of the “human economy” in the contemporary world.
