Monthly Photos June 2026 : Beirut during the World Cup

A huge Argentine flag seen in a residential neighbourhood. This is not Buenos Aires, however; it is in Beirut. The photo was taken during the 2018 World Cup. The Lebanese team has yet to qualify for the World Cup, but many Lebanese choose a team to support. During the tournament, flags of prominent footballing countries can be seen all over the city. After matches, many supporters celebrating their team’s victory–or sometimes simply making the occasion regardless of the result– set off fireworks or drive through the streets honking their horns, making the city quite noisy. Teams from South America and Europe tend to be most popular, but in 2022, the Moroccan team’s success was also widely celebrated.
