ILCAA is an international research center that offers a range of services to academic communities worldwide. The services available to international scholars are summarized below.

Use of Facilities and Resources
Library
In the Library, you can browse rare books, reference books such as dictionaries, catalogs, large books, series, microfilms, journals, etc., among the materials held by the Institute.

Phonetics Laboratory
The Institute’s Phonetics Laboratory is a facility for conducting basic research on linguistic sounds through analyses and experiments.
The speech and language library attached to the phonetics laboratory holds important recordings of languages, folk tales, and folk music collected through field studies. Recorded disks and tapes of various languages from around the world are available for lending.
A sound-treated recording room is part of the phonetics laboratory. The high-end solid-state sound recorders provided in the recording room enable high-quality live recordings of speech samples, for example, of language consultants. Moreover, recordings can be processed using the instruments available in the laboratory.
Facilities for Research
As a Joint Usage/Joint Research Center, the Institute is equipped with a range of research instruments and facilities.
Aside from the Library and the Phonetics Laboratory, the Information Resources Center houses equipment which includes:
・a printer and scanning devices for large-sized materials, such as maps and posters
・audio-visual equipment for playing various types of formats and digitizing analog format materials
・computers for editing audio-visual files
・photography and video equipment
・microfilm reader
This equipment is available for joint research; researchers can use it in collaboration with ILCAA Research Staff.

Online Resources Catalogue
The results of ILCAA’s Joint Research Projects and those of the research staff include online dictionaries and databases available on the Institute’s website for use by external researchers and the general public.
Participation in and Acceptance of Joint Research
Acceptance of Research Fellow/Junior Research Fellow
Research Fellow
The Institute accepts researchers from outside the university to engage them in its joint research projects with its full-time staff.
When they can leave their home institution for a certain period on sabbatical or an equivalent, they can promote joint research using our institute as a research base.

Junior Research Fellow
The Institute accepts early-career researchers who have completed a doctoral degree or higher to participate in joint research activities with the support of full-time staff members to foster successors in accordance with the Institute’s establishment purpose. Early-career researchers can stay at the Institute for a specified period and advance their research under the guidance of full-time faculty members.

Acceptance of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The Institute accepts Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Research Fellows as part of its commitment to fostering the next generation of researchers. Fellows may conduct their research at the Institute while holding a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship. Applicants are advised to consult with full-time Institute staff in advance when applying for the fellowship.

Acceptance of Graduate Students
ILCAA has many research staff members in linguistics, anthropology, and history/area studies. All research staff members, except assistant professors, participate in the educational activities of the Graduate School of Global Studies at TUFS.
ILCAA accepts and supervises doctoral students in linguistics, anthropology, history, and other areas of specialization, with a main focus on Asia and Africa. Some of the full-time ILCAA members also participate in the educational activities of the Master’s Program.

ILCAA Joint Research Projects
ILCAA Joint Research Projects, conducted by the staff members of the Institute and external researchers, constitute the core of research activities at ILCAA as an international research center.

Publishing Research Results
The institute publishes peer-reviewed scholarly work in the humanities, with a focus on Asia and Africa.
Manuscript submissions are accepted through the following platforms.
・Journal of Asian and African Studies (Periodicals)
・Asian and African Languages and Linguistics (Periodicals)
・NUSA: Linguistic studies of languages in and around Indonesia (Periodicals)
・Asian and African Lexicon Series (Books)
The series contains the results of field research by the staff and affiliated researchers of ILCAA. The content varies from basic word lists to extensive dictionaries. Manuscripts are received at any time. Refer to the application guidelines (PDF) for your submission of manuscript.
