How to use ILCAA

Take advantage of ILCAA!

ILCAA is an international research center that offers various services to academic communities worldwide. The services that are available to international scholars are summarized below.
For details, please follow the links. (The following is a list of services that are most relevant to researchers outside of Japan.)

Use of Facilities and Resources

Library

In the Library, you can browse rare books, reference books such as dictionaries, catalogs, large books, series, microfilms, journals, etc., among the materials held by the Institute.

Phonetics Laboratory

The Institute’s Phonetics Laboratory is a facility for conducting analyses and experiments on basic research on linguistic sounds.

The speech and language library attached to the phonetics laboratory holds important recorded materials on languages, folk tales, and folk music obtained through field studies. Recorded disks and tapes of various languages in the world are available for loan.

A sound-treated recording room forms part of the phonetics laboratory. With the high-end solid-state sound recorders provided in the recording room, high quality live recording of speech samples is possilbe, for example, of speech of language consultants. Moreover, processing the recordings with the instruments provided in the laboratory is also possible.

Facilities for Research

As a Joint Usage/Joint Research Center, the Institute is equipped with a variety of instruments and facilities for research.

Aside from the Library and the Phonetics Laboratory, Information Resources Center houses equipments which include:
・a printer and scanning devices for large-size materials, such as maps and posters
・audio-visual equipments for playing various types of formats and digitizing analog format materials
・computers for editing audio-visual files
・photography and video equipment
・microfilm reader

These equipments are for use for collaborative research; researchers can use them in collaboration with ILCAA Research Staff.

The results of ILCAA’s Joint Research Projects and those by the research staff include online dictionaries and databases that are made available on the Institute’s website to be used by for use by external researchers and by the general public.

Participation in and acceptance of joint research

Accepting Fellow/Junior Fellow

Fellow

The Institute accepts researchers from outside the university for the purpose of engaging in joint research with its full-time staff.
When they are able to leave their home institution for a certain period of time on sabbatical or equivalent, they can promote joint research using our institute as a research base.

Junior Research Fellow

The Institute accepts junior researchers who have completed their doctoral degree or higher to participate in joint research activities with the support of full-time staff members in order to foster successors in accordance with the purpose of the Institute’s establishment. Junior researchers can stay at the Institute for a certain period of time and promote their research activities under the guidance of full-time faculty members.

Accepting Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)

The Institute accepts “JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships” as part of its efforts to train the next generation of researchers.
These researchers can develop their research activities as JSPS Postdoctoral Fellows based at the Institute.
Please consult with the full-time staff when accepting the fellowship.

Accepting Graduate Courses

The Institute has many staff members in the fields of linguistics, anthropology, and history. All professors and associate professors, except assistant professors, participate in educational activities at the Graduate School of International Studies, TUFS.
We accept and supervise doctoral students in the fields of linguistics, anthropology, history, and other areas of specialization, mainly focusing on Asia and Africa. In addition, some of our staff members participate in the educational activities of the Master’s Program.

ILCAA Joint Research Projects

ILCAA Joint Research Projects, conducted by the staff members of the Institute and external researchers, constitute the core of research activities at ILCAA as an international research center.

Publishing Research Results

The institute publishes peer-reviewed scholarly work in the humanities, with a focus on Asia and Africa.
Manuscript submissions are accepted through the following platforms.
Journal of Asian and African Studies (Periodicals) 
Asian and African Languages and Linguistics (Periodicals)  
NUSA: Linguistic studies of languages in and around Indonesia (Periodicals)
Asian and African Lexicon Series (Books)
The series contains the results of field research by the staff and affiliated researchers of ILCAA. The content varies from basic word lists to extensive dictionaries. Manuscripts are received at any time. Refer to the application guidelines (PDF) for your submission of manuscript. For inquiries regarding submissions or to submit a manuscript, please contact one of the full-time faculty members at our institute.
