As an international research center, ILCAA serves as a hub for academic networks, fostering connections among researchers and linking diverse research initiatives across borders. The Institute organizes and supports joint research projects led by both ILCAA staff and external scholars, and disseminates their outcomes in a variety of formats. ILCAA remains open to the broader research community, both in promoting collaborative research and in sharing its results.

ILCAA Institute-wide Project

In the recent transcultural contexts — where the movement of people, goods, and information has intensified and the boundaries between cultures increasingly overlap — there is a growing need for new humanities methodologies that move beyond the traditional paradigm of multicultural conviviality. This project, as a core project of the TUFS Field Science Commons, responds to this demand through integrated knowledge based on interdisciplinary collaboration, focusing on the three fields: Area Studies/History, Linguistics, and Anthropology. Grounded in field science, we will explore the mechanisms of “trust” and “tolerance” among communities in Asia and Africa in particular, and envision models of symbiotic society for the new era.

Core Projects

Core Projects, which are formally established research units led by ILCAA staff members, serve as the institutional backbone of ILCAA’s mid-term research strategy.

Through these Core Projects, ILCAA promotes the exchange and development of academic knowledge by organizing related joint research projects, international symposia, scholarly lectures, workshops, and publications across its core fields. The projects also play a central role in collecting research materials, maintaining databases, and preserving and disseminating linguistic and cultural resources. Through these efforts, ILCAA contributes to the advancement and wider circulation of scholarly knowledge on the languages and cultures of Asia and Africa.

Joint Research Projects

ILCAA supports joint research projects that bring together researchers from Japan and abroad, making full use of the Institute’s facilities, resources, and expertise. Through these collaborations, specialists from diverse fields work collectively to generate new academic knowledge.

Each academic year, the Institute calls for proposals for new joint research initiatives and provides financial and material support to selected projects. The outcomes of these projects are widely disseminated through symposia, workshops, lectures, and publications, contributing to broader scholarly exchange.

Joint Research Groups

The Joint Research Group is a framework launched in 2019 to identify and foster emerging research activities based on creative and flexible ideas. Several ILCAA staff members lead these activities in collaboration with external researchers.

Externally Funded Research

To advance research on the languages and cultures of Asia and Africa, the Institute actively seeks external funding, including Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as well as research grants from private foundations. In recent years, the Institute has also launched collaborative projects with private institutions, enabling the more practical application of its research findings.
