Rethinking politics of belonging through Middle Eastern thought

My research examines how forms of affiliation such as religion and sect have been discussed in relation to politics in modern Middle Eastern political thought, with a particular focus on Lebanon. I explore questions such as when and under what conditions specific affiliations are portrayed in positive or negative terms, and how political thought has envisaged coexistence among people with different affiliations.

My previous research has focused on the thought of Lebanese communists, who sought to overcome a political system in which t sectarian difference was closely tied to political institutions and conflict. While continuing to focus primarily on Lebanon, I will also undertake comparative research with other regions in order to analyse how diverse identities have been discussed in modern political thought. My overarching aim is to rethink identity politics worldwide from the perspective of Middle Eastern political thought.
