I am conducting experimental phonetics research on Yanbian Korean in China
My research focuses on the Korean language spoken in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of China, using experimental phonetic methods such as speech experiments, acoustic analysis, and perception studies. Yanbian Korean is a regional variety of Korean spoken mainly in northeastern China by the Korean Chinese ethnic group, and it retains distinctive linguistic features shaped by its historical background and multilingual environment. Through the description of the acoustic characteristics of vowels and consonants, I have worked to clarify the structure of its phonological system. Currently, I am conducting comparative research on auditory perception between speakers of Yanbian Korean and speakers of the Seoul dialect, exploring the diversity of phonological perception within the same language.
I am also deeply interested in the documentation and preservation of regional languages whose speaker numbers are declining due to social change. Building on the speech data I have collected, I aim to construct and publish a speech corpus of Yanbian Korean. In the future, I plan to collect linguistic materials on minority languages in China and other lesser-documented languages, and to promote the digitization and archiving of speech materials, as well as make them widely available, thereby contributing to the preservation and sharing of linguistic resources.
