ID: MEIS

KeywordMiddle East and Islamic Studies

MEIS (Middle East and Islamic Studies) research hub was formed on the basis of a MEXT-funded project conducted from 2005 to 2009. During this period, the Japan Center for Middle East Studies was established in Beirut in 2006, followed by a liaison office in Kota Kinabalu in 2008, alongside joint research, workshops, and symposia on the Middle East and Islam. Launched in 2010, MEIS has promoted research in cooperation with core programs and related centers, and since 2016 has served as a secondary hub of the National Institutes for the Humanities’ network-based project “Contemporary Middle East Studies,” focusing on human mobility, networks, and social transformation.
