ID: jrp000317

KeywordSouth Asia; Persian Literati; Ganesh Das

The Persianate world, a linguistic cosmopolis where Persian was used as a lingua franca and various cultural elements associated with it were shared, is considered to have declined in the 19th century. This research project analyzes the writings of Ganesh Das, a Hindu scribe who served the Sikh Kingdom and the Jammu Princely State using Persian during the first half of the 19th century in the last phase of the Persianate age. This project aims to reveal the actual state of how the legacy of the literary culture cultivated within the Persianate world was inherited in 19th-century South Asia through analyzing Ganesh Das’s works.
