A Study on the Islamic Material Culture: An Investigation of the Sakate Site

ID: jrp000316

KeywordEthiopia; Islamic archaeology; Medieval archaeological sites

In August 2023, the project leader identified the Sakate archaeological site in the Sakate area of the West Hararghe Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. The site is distinguished by a mosque of considerable scale, which is regarded as one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. While previous research on Islamic archaeology in Ethiopia has predominantly concentrated on the eastern part of the country, medieval sites in the southeast remain largely understudied and warrant systematic investigation. This project constitutes a collaborative endeavor among scholars specializing in archaeology, history, architecture, linguistics, and anthropology, with a regional focus on Ethiopia and its neighboring areas. Its primary objective is to elucidate the chronology of construction and the sociocultural groups associated with the Sakate site.
