The aim of this project is to describe and analyze the various phonetic characteristics and functions in East Asian languages including Mongolian, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. More specifically, it empirically examines phonetic characteristics and functions focusing both on phonological phenomena such as lexical tones and intonation and on non-phonological phenomena such as auditory impressions and paralinguistic information, using multiple methods including acoustic analyses, perceptual experiments, and interview surveys.
