Maritime Southeast Asia as Contact Zones: Flow of People, Goods and Culture, and Social Transformation
ID: jrp000313
KeywordSoutheast Asia; maritime world; contact zone; flow; social transformation
This study is an attempt at collaborative research that conceptualizes the maritime world of Southeast Asia as a multidimensional “contact zones,” examining the flows of people, goods, and cultures, as well as the social transformations that arise through encounters and negotiations, from interdisciplinary and transregional perspectives. A contact zone refers to a social space in which people, goods, and cultures move geographically, crossing established units such as nation-states, and come into contact and interact with one another. Through this research, we aim to offer new perspectives to studies on migration, refugees, globalization, and related fields.
