Islamization of Southeast Asia in the Early Modern Period: South Asian Influences and Religious Traditions Prior to the Arrival of Islam

This project focuses on the Islamization of maritime Southeast Asia between the 14th and 18th centuries, particularly the influence of South Asia and the continuity and transformation of local religious traditions prior to the arrival of Islam. It analyzes various sources in Southeast Asian languages (Acehnese, Malay, Javanese, Chamic, etc.) as well as Arabic and Persian. Specifically, it carries out analyses on history books (babad, hikayat, etc.), treatises on governance, heroic epics, mystical poetry and treatises, divination and calendar(primbon), categorized by social positions such as royal authorities and court poets, religious scholars and Sufis, and popular religious practitioners. The project also examines the distinguishing features of Islamization in Southeast Asia through comparison with the Islamization of South and West Asia discussed in each respective field.
