Ethnography on Youth 'hustles' in Eastern Africa: their imagination and practice

ID: jrp000300

This project is the second stage of ethnographic research intended to explore how African youths are endeavoring to build their careers while navigating their surrounding reality and striving to implement their future plans in African countries where growth, tourism, ICT, and higher education are all advancing. How do youths from a variety of social backgrounds (classes, refugee statuses, genders, etc.) bring their imagination and creativity to bear in East African society, where they encounter political corruption, prolonged governance, domestic wealth disparities, civil conflict, postwar social restructuring, and patriarchal social norms? The research will focus on their performance using their bodies and tools such as ICT, as well as their practical skills and strategies.
