The new boundary-crossing approach on Ancient Chinese Slip and Tablet Documents(5): Utilizing digital humanities for a comprehensive diplomatics of unearthed wooden documents

ID: jrp000291

This project aims to highlight the evolution of the research on ancient Chinese slips and tablet documents through historical information science. Previous studies on wooden or bamboo documents were divided into those of the Qin–Han and Wei–Jin periods. However, the “age of bamboo and wooden slips,” where wooden or bamboo slips have been used for administrative writing materials in ancient Chinese states, continued from the Warring States period (403–221 B.C.) to the Jin era (265–316/317–419 A.D.). To say the least, the find sites of wooden or bamboo documents made in and after the Qin Dynasty are equally distributed. This project explores the methods for using information science to conduct truly “comprehensive” research of more than 200,000 wooden or bamboo slips used for documents.
