ID: JPEAKS253
KeywordSoutheast Asia, Globalization, Livelihood change, Market integration, Food and health
Local communities in Southeast Asia are rapidly changing as they become more closely tied to the global economy. In Indonesia and Malaysia, major palm oil producers, plantation expansion has reshaped environments and livelihoods. In the Indonesian archipelago, maritime communities have intensified octopus fishing in response to growing demand from Japan, strengthening market ties. At the same time, subsistence activities such as cultivation, gathering, fishing, and hunting for household use remain important alongside reliance on purchased foods and cash-oriented production.
This study distinguishes among locally consumed goods, goods from other regions, and goods produced for external markets, and examines their links to health. Using interviews, participant observation, and analyses of diet, physical activity, and biological samples, it provides an integrated understanding of livelihoods, health, and culture under rapid change.
