Pastoralism in arid regions is a vital livelihood that supports food supply and everyday life. Although shaped by modern political and social change, it continues in many areas in adapted forms. At the same time, water resources that underpin ecosystem services face growing pressure under rapid environmental change.
This study examines pastoralism and grazing as food production systems, focusing on water use and its links to social networks and institutions, while considering political and policy influences. Through regional comparison centered on the former Soviet regions and Mongolia, and where possible including Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, it aims to clarify relationships among pastoral livelihoods, water resources, and socio-political contexts.
