Dynamism of Cultural Contact in South Asia

ID: brp26002

KeywordSouth Asia; Cultural Contact; Boundary; Translation

This project will explore the processes through which things and people from different cultural and social backgrounds come into contact, and the consequences thereof in South Asia, where diverse religions, languages and human communities coexist. The project encompasses the period from the early modern era to the present day, examining 'contact' between things and people that are different in various senses. In this examination, close attention is paid to the power relations at play in these spaces of cultural contact. The existence, formation and transformation of 'boundaries' will also be a key theme, serving both as a premise for discussing contact and as one of its outcomes. Furthermore, an examination will be conducted of the mechanisms by which objects and persons are regarded as 'different', as well as the norms and power relations that operate within them.
