Held alongside Painting Together: Apprenticeship and Art Anthropology in a Sign-Painting Workshop in Kumasi, Ghana, this talk explores the collecting and exhibiting of African art. Organiser Shoko Mori apprenticed under Ghanaian sign painter Kwame Akoto, whose work and worldview inform her practice. The Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac acquired his works and held a solo exhibition lasting nearly six months, inviting him to its opening. Curator Sarah Ligner will give a keynote on the Kwame Akoto exhibition, followed by Tsunehiko Nishiyama’s case study of the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu’s exhibition on African and Asian contemporary art through migration and exchange. With commentary by Shirabe Ogata, an anthropologist specialising in Nigerian art, and moderated by Mori, the discussion explores how exhibitions convey artists’ worlds and exchanges across regions.
