In Kumasi, Ghana, sign painters and apprentices create colorful hand-painted signs. Since 2017, Shoko Mori has studied under master sign painter Kwame Akoto, spending eight months working in his workshop in 2024. As an anthropologist, artist, and apprentice, she learned techniques through painting alongside her master and fellow apprentices, while building relationships and reflecting on their respective cultures and societies. Featuring Mori's paintings, photographs, videos, and field notes, this exhibition explores art anthropology through apprenticeship, collaborative making, and exhibition-making. On weekdays, Mori will paint in the gallery, welcoming visitors to watch and chat. Four related talks exploring African art exhibitions, Ghanaian activists' creative practices, urban culture and apprenticeship in Kumasi, and art and design emerging from encounters and research will be held at 405 Commons Lab. Admission is free.
