We will screen Rhythms of Sodade, an ethnographic film set in Cabo Verde. Following the screening, both directors will join us to discuss the film’s background, Cabo Verdean society and culture, and the practice of crafting ethnography through moving images. Film Synopsis: On São Vicente, an island in northwestern Cabo Verde, Carlos navigates daily life amid struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. Resonating throughout his journey is sodade, a feeling deeply rooted in Cabo Verde. More than nostalgia, sodade has been passed down through music since the era of slavery and continues to live on in people’s memories. By capturing Carlos’s voice, memories, and surrounding soundscapes, this ethnographic film offers a glimpse of sodade—as both personal sorrow and an echo of history.
