Photographer Fusayoshi Kai has been photographing people's everyday lives, mainly in the Demachi District, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, since the 1970s and continues to do so today while running a café called "Honyara-do." His photos capturing everyday life in Kyoto, including the "Children Series" and "Animal Series," have been highly acclaimed not only in Japan but also abroad. In recent years, he has also stayed abroad—in places such as Europe and India—to take photographs and hold solo exhibitions. His methodology is extremely simple: as the title of this exhibition suggests, he photographs the people and scenes he encounters while "dawdling" (michikusa) around the area. This exhibition will display 60 photo works taken in the Demachi District from the 1970’s to 2010’s. At the same time, three researchers specializing in area studies, who have conducted research in Cameroon, the Philippines, and Vietnam, will each display about 10 photos on the theme of their relationship with local societies. Through these, the exhibition aims to create an opportunity to rethink the meaning of “interacting with local society.”
