You and I share an endless struggle and desire in publishing books: we want to write and produce something novel and interesting. However, what exactly do "novelty" or "interest" mean? And how can we give them form? In this presentation, I will explore these questions by drawing on my daily practice as an editor, specifically focusing on the process of publishing doctoral dissertations as ethnographic books in anthropology and area studies. I will propose the importance of testing the author's inspirations through the field and the readers in order to generate novelty and interest, bringing this process into conversation with anthropological discussions surrounding concepts such as "invention" and "experimentation."
