Workshop “Researching (Post) Conflict-Affected Settings in the Middle East”

Abstract: What methodologies are practically and ethically suitable for researching conflict-affected and post-conflict regions? This workshop will feature a brief presentation by Dr. Layla Saleh, who has written extensively on political and popular movements in Syria and the broader Middle East. Together, we will explore this crucial question in Middle Eastern studies. Participants will also share their research questions, methodological challenges, and creative approaches. We hope this workshop provides valuable insights for everyone. Lecturer: Dr. Layla Saleh is a political scientist specializing in politics and International Relations (IR) of the Arab region. Her focus is on 'politics from below’ as it relates to protest, revolution, civic activism, democratization, and gender politics. Her books include Revolution and Democracy in Tunisia (Oxford UP, 2024, co-authored with Larbi Sadiki) and US Hard Power in the Arab World: Resistance, the Syrian Uprising, and the War on Terror (Routledge, 2017).
