This event is jointly organized by the research project "Searching for Stories that Connect War and the Self," a featured part of the "80 Years After the War: Special Exhibition The War Exhibition 2025" at the Showa No Kurashi Museum, and the JSPS Transformative Area (A) "Face-body design," specifically C01 "The Body in Death / The body non-existence." The museum's collection features artifacts donated by ordinary people, such as senninbari and letters of encouragement written by children. These materials bear witness to the lived experiences of individuals caught between the national demand for "bodies sacrificed for the nation" and the personal yearning for "bodies praying for the lives of loved ones." The symposium will explore the connections between wartime narratives, artifacts, and our emotions, memories, and dignity. By moving between wartime Japan and the present day, we aim to create a space to rethink our understanding of life, death, and the body. Through these discussions, we will reflect on the meaning and transmission of the "memory of war."
