This symposium, jointly organized by the Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Area (A) (2025–2029) and the Nakanoshima Center for the Arts and Technology, explores the theme of “Death and Art.” By illuminating the “reality” of life through the discontinuity of death, the symposium aims to deepen our understanding of lived reality. This approach seeks to grasp the latent potential of life as it manifests in the visible and experienced present. The manifestation of life’s potential can be understood, for instance, as the paradoxical evocation of alternate ways of living— “how life could have been otherwise”—when confronted with death, or as moments where expectations of the future and memories of the past permeate and transform one another. This event will feature an exhibition of works by Japanese painter Kyoko Nakamura, three talks, and two commentaries. Through this exchange, we hope to create an occasion to encounter new dimensions of reality in relation to “The Body in Death / The Body in Non-existence.”
