On February 28, 2026, the war against Iran began with a preemptive strike by U.S. and Israeli forces. While the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei and massive bombing raids in Iran are underway, Iran has intensified its attacks on Israeli territory and on U.S. military bases and related facilities in Gulf oil-producing nations and Turkey. Furthermore, Israel launched a ground offensive against Lebanon, effectively engaging in a two-front war. Regardless of how this war unfolds, it will have an extremely significant impact on Iran, the Middle East, and the world. What is the nature of this war? In what context should it be understood? What impact will it have going forward? Three experts will discuss these questions: an international political scientist specializing in Iran; a Middle Eastern political historian and former diplomat with experience in Iran, Iraq, and Syria; and a scholar of modern and contemporary Lebanese and Syrian history.
