In recent years, the evolution of generative AI has rapidly expanded across a wide range of fields. However, there remain many voices of uncertainty and hesitation, such as “How can this technology be meaningfully integrated into our humanities research?” and “What does its use actually look like in practice?” This lecture introduces practical ways to apply large language models (LLMs)—the core technology behind generative AI—to linguistic research. Beginning with a clear explanation of LLMs’ fundamental mechanisms, it will showcase concrete examples of their application in language studies and offer insights into emerging research methodologies. Together with participants, we will explore new and productive ways of engaging with AI in the humanities. No prior technical expertise is required. The lecture warmly welcomes researchers and students interested in generative AI or considering incorporating it into their future work.
