About the Project

Project term: April, 2024–March, 2027

Both before and after the 1784 foundation of the Asiatic Society in Calcutta, a lively exchange was held among Western colonial bureaucrats, Orientalists, and local intellectual elites, giving rise to various discourses that later shaped the views of India in Orientalism. This research project will elucidate how these views of India, which continue to influence contemporary thought, were formulated through an analysis of the intellectual exchange between Europeans and locals in Calcutta, using the historical documents that they left behind.
