About the Project

Project term: April, 2014–March, 2017

Dunhuang, which is now an oasis city belonging to the Gansu Province of modern China, was also the westernmost terminal of so-called China Proper. The society of Dunhuang was composed not only of the Chinese, but also of peoples of various linguistic origin, i.e. Indic, Iranian, Turkic, Mongolic, Tibetan, Tangut, etc.
This project compares textual analysis using multilingual materials discovered at the Dunhuang Caves and reconsiders the linguistic and cultural exchanges in the social history of Dunhuang. This research will concentrate mainly on unpublished texts in holding institutes in Europe and China, and on the wall inscriptions in the Dunhuang Caves.
The joint researchers will present papers on text materials in each language from linguistic, philological, and historical viewpoints. Furthermore, through discussion on each presentation, the researchers will obtain a comprehensive understanding on the multilingual sources from Dunhuang, as a step to understanding the integrated reconstruction of cultural exchange in the history of Dunhuang society.
