Modern History of Turkey and Central Eurasia, Interaction between Modern Japan and Turkic peoples

My research has focused on Turkic émigrés, migrants, and refugees who escaped from the Central Eurasia to the Middle East and Europe due to the Russian Revolution or other political events in the first half of the 20th century. However, some fled to the Far East, primarily Japan and Manchuria, and organized communities. As part of the Islamic Trust Studies Project, I hope to closely examine these Türk-Tatars in Japan and Manchuria. This group attempted to maintain their identities and pass on them to next generation through socio-religious activities and education. Their periodicals, Yaña Yapon Möxbire in Tokyo (1932–1938) and Milli Bayraq in Mukden (1935–1945) socio-religious activities of the communities, their awareness of a crisis with respect to their identities, and their accommodations to their host societies, some of which could be even regarded as pandering. In this project, I examine this human and intellectual network and the connectivity of Türk-Tatars in Japan and Manchuria, based on these periodicals.

Recent Interests:

During the first declaration of a state of emergency, in spring 2020, I was engaged in preparing an index for Yaña Milli Yul, a Tatar journal published in interwar Berlin. Furthermore, I published my index for the afore-mentioned Yaña Yapon Möxbire in 2023. In the latter site, I listed various miscellaneous entries, reflecting the socio-religious activities and concerns of the Türk-Tatar community in Tokyo in detail. I intend to continue investigating and updating to complete both indexes.
