Yangon’s famous landmark

Downtown Yangon is laid out as a grid consisiting of five long east-west roads, and about 100 north-south roads and streets. Sule Pagoda is situated roughly in the center of the grid, at Maha-Bandula Road which is the middle of the five east-west roads. The north-south road it lies on is named after the pagoda.

The photo is an evening view of an area north of Sule Pagoda, a scene already familiar to me. The number of women wearing jeans and the number of foreign tourists have obviously increased since I began to study in the city 25 years ago. The high buildings on the right (actually southwest) side of the pagoda did not exist during my stay as a student. I heard that not a few citizens of Yangon frowned on the construction of such high buildings near the pagoda, but they have now become a familiar part of the landscape.
