A ruin of a Georgian church in Turkey

There are a number of ruins of medieval Georgian churches and monasteries in the far northeastern part of Turkey, near the border with Georgia. The one on the photo is the Tbeti church located in the village of Cevizli, Şavşat district, Artvin Province.

The church was originally built in the 10th century. Today, however, we see only the damaged facade remaining. The building was once used as a mosque by locals in the 17th to 19th centuries.

Though many of the villagers are ethnic Georgians and they, especially elderly people, are still speaking a vernacular dialect of Georgian, it is gradually being taken over by Turkish and disappearing in the region.
