Away from the hustle and bustle of Cairo, I came to Alexandria, the second-largest city in Egypt and my roommate’s hometown. Crete, a Greek island, is located to the north of the city. Cerebrated as “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, this city has a cosmopolitan atmosphere common to the other Eastern Mediterranean cities.
I went to the Corniche to breathe to the full. A moist wind which purified my lungs contaminated with exhaust gas and dust. Seafood. Shallalat Gardens. People with East European or South European features. Yellow taxis. A family of Greek priest. Home-cooked dishes of “Mom.” My roommate’s nephews who kept waving their hands on the veranda in a fond farewell to me. In contrast to Cairo which gave me surprises and trials, this city was filled with serenity.
