Proof of Marriage

In the traditional wedding of the Hamer tribe, who live in the Omo Valley (Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region in Ethiopia), the bride is whipped by her husband and the men of his relatives.
Wounds on her back are the proof of marriage. Thus, they injure the body on occasion so that they could remember the stories of their lives by the scars.
