Graffiti on the Wall of Akka

The photo was taken in the port city of Akka in northern Israel. On the wall of the Old City, located on the shore of the Mediterranean, a graffito in Arabic stated “Akka is my hometown”.

Once prospered from the maritime trade that passed through their coast, Akka today is home to Arab Palestinian residents who have remained there after the creation of the state of Israel. Arabic music is heard from the old street market, and the local young boys jump off the ancient walls into the sea in a hot summer day. But the city has also been the site of the rapid gentrification promoted by the government’s tourism planning. Another graffito sprayed on the street wall said “Akka is not for sale”.
