In the city center of Imphal, the capital of Manipur state in Northeast India, there lies a vast polo ground. During polo matches, crowds of locals often gather along the fence near the old Royal Palace to watch the star players and swift horses in fascination. In fact, though formalized and popularized by the British, modern polo is said to have derived from Manipur.
