When I was walking around Lower Shwebontha Street on Sunday morning, I saw more than dozen of chess boards set on small plastic tables at a corner of the sidewalk. Over the corner was hung a green banner which reads “The 9th Shwebontha Chess Tournament Commemorating the 66th Independence Day”. (The Independence Day is 4th January, about a week later.) According to the notice there, participants need pre-registration by paying 2,000 Kyats (about 200 Japanese Yen), lunch is supplied, and the players near the top win a cash award up to 120,000 Kyats.
There were still few players who had started the game, probably a warm-up, and also few spectators. Lower Shwebontha Street itself was blocked and the foot race competition, which is another event commemorating Independence Day, was held. It was really a restful holiday morning.
