[Lithograph 13]
FEMALE FELLAH

It was common for Egyptian women to carry their children on their shoulders instead in their arms (also see lithograph 14). This woman, like the girl in lithograph 9,wears a ṭarḥa (veil) on her head and is dressed in a loose thawb (gown). However, unlike the peasants in lithographs 15 and 17, she also wears a burquʻ (face-veil), and hence, she possibly belongs to a fairly upper class. Guessing from the tattoos on her hands and feet, she must have many tattoos on her hidden chin and chest as well.
