PEASANT DWELLINGS. UPPER EGYPT
The strange structures in this lithograph are decaying dovecotes, with living necessities stored inside. The peasants' house must have been situated beyond the wall. In front of the wall, a woman spins thread and there is a child seen holding a cat, which were rare in Egypt at that time. On a part of the dovecote-roof, overhung by bananas and date-palms, we observe a turtle-dove, and upon a bough to the right, a number of sparrows. The goat (left) and chickens (right) are probably the family's livestock.
