Bontok
is the name given by linguists to the language spoken in the municipality
of Bontoc, Mountain Province in the northern Philippines. This language
has a number of quite different dialects, each spoken in one of the communities,
or Ìli, that constitute the municipality. Residents
in these communities name their language by the name of their community,
thus in Bontoc town, the language is referred to as Finontok, while in
Guinaang it is referred to as Khininaang. Usually, however, people
simply refer to their way of speech as kali 'language'.
The kali that is described in this site is the dialect of Bontok
that is spoken in Guinaang, a community of over 2,000 residents located
about 12 km. north of Bontoc town by jeep road.
