WARRIOR. FROM AMHARA
The Blue Nile that winds through Ethiopia flows south from its source, the Lake Tana. Amhara was situated on the Blue Nile's left bank on a plateau in the center of northern Ethiopia, and depended mostly on agriculture. At that time, it was a central region of the Ethiopian Empire of the Solomon Dynasty. In this land, the artist sketched a warrior wearing a white turban tightly wrapped around his head like a snake, and armed with a spear and gaša (shield). He wears a shamma, made from a single piece of cotton cloth, and a fur skin around his shoulders. His dark brown skin and large eyes leave a strong impression.
