ARAB SHEIKH SMOKING.  FROM THE COAST OF THE RED SEA
展示品
The land route through the Eastern Desert leads to the coast of the Red Sea. Here, we see a shaykh (sheikh, local influential person), with sword on his side and dagger in his belt and kurbāj (whip of hippopotamus or rhinoceros skin) in his right hand, having a slave boy hold a shīsha (water pipe) while he smokes on the amber mouthpiece. The shaykh wears luxurious clothes and a large turban, and sits on a dīwān (couch). The slave also wears fine clothes. This shaykh is apparently a wealthy man.
