ZEYAT (OILMAN), HIS SHOP AND CUSTOMERS. CAIRO

The zayyāt(zeyat) sold oil for cooking and lighting. In Egypt, the sūqs (bāzārs) where the streets are lined with shops selling similar merchandise are famous. However, the artist prefered a zayyāt in business beneath the shadows of a spreading vine to the crowd of sūqs. Nonetheless, as in sūqs, the price of oil depends on bargaining. Both customers carry oil containers on their heads.
