[Lithograph 8]
JANISSARY AND MERCHANT. CAIRO

Here, Europeans have mistaken qawwās (guards for consulates, etc.) for Yeniçeri(Janissary). The Yeniçeris were known as the standing infantry under the direct control of the Ottoman sultan, but were abolished in 1826. They did not exist in 1840s, when this piece was painted. The qawwās (left figure) carries a dagger and two pistols at his waist, and holds a cane with the hard tip in his hand. The merchant on the right is, unlike the zayyāt in lithograph 7, a wealthy merchant engaged in long-distance trade. He wears fur skinned-clothes and smokes a shbuq (pipe).
