HABESH, OR ABYSSINIAN SLAVE.  CAIRO
展示品
Ḥabash(Habesh) is an Arabic term for Ethiopia or the Ethiopian people, and is also etymologically connected to the word Abyssinia. Female Abyssinian slaves were featured in the tale of “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” in Arabian Nights, so they were of particular interest to Europeans. The female slave in the center of the lithograph rests her hand on a cradle. The light-complexioned woman on the right holds a baby in her arms, which was unusual for Egyptians at that time. She may be the nanny.
