NIZAM, OR REGULAR TROOPS. KANKA
Nizām(Nizam) is abbreviation for Nizām Jadīd (the new army), and is the modernized regular army created in 1822 by the Muḥammad ʻAlī government through a drafting system. The city of Khānkāh(Kanka), shown in this lithograph, held a garrison for the training of the drafted Egyptians from 1828. These regular troops wear red ṭarbūshes and white uniforms. |
