The Grove and Valley of Jugdulluk
In January 1842, 16,000 British troops withdrawing from Kabul under the command of Major-General William Elphinstone were ambushed here. The entire force was massacred, except for some prisoners of war and one surgeon who escaped. The author, who passed through this valley seven months later, dismally describes this valley of bones.
