A Horseman of Jaunbauz, Or Afghaun Cavalry
The Janbaz, which means “sporters with lives,” was a unit that was recruited into the service for the Shah and trained by European officers. Many of them were hoodlums, and many had been robbers. The horse in the picture carries a cylindrical hookah case and a pan of live coals under its girth.
