One day a man went fishing. He fished for a long time. With his
basket full of fish, he went home in the late afternoon. A fox, however,
sneaked the fish out of his basket, and he didn't notice at all. When
he got home, he said,
"I caught a lot of fish today."
But he went got home he noticed that the fish were all gone. He
just had an empty basket. He said,
"I wonder where the fish went. I thought I covered the basket
tight, but maybe I lost them by mistake."
The next morning, he went to the same fishing spot following the
way he had walked the day before. There were no fish whatsoever.
Instead, there were some footprints of a fox. He started fishing
again and the fox came to him. He wanted to kill the fox himself.
Then the fox said.
"You can't kill me. You'd better not think about hoping to
kill me. Rather, why don't you kill other animals?"
"Well, what should I do?"
"You'd be better off not thinking about killing at all. Anyway,
there is no way you can kill me."
He was just listening while fishing. And he had just decided not
to kill the fox when he noticed that the fox had sneaked off with
his fish again.
Later the fox met a raven. The raven saw the fox had a lot of fish,
and said.
"Well, well, well, how on earth did you kill so many fish?"
"I just stuck my tail into a hole in the ice."
The raven then said,
"I'd love to do that, too. Please teach me how."
The fox took the raven to the other side of the river.
"What should I do?"
"Just sit there. Remember that when you catch a fish, you
will feel a pull at your tail and it will become heavy."
So the raven kept sitting and sitting at the hole, but the tail
got stuck to the ice. The next day, the fox came.
"How's it going?"
"I probably got many fish. My tail is pretty heavy."
But he couldn't pull it out of the hole.
"Stay there. After a long while, I'll be back, and then I'll
help you bring up all the fish."
The fox said so and left. After a long while, the fox really did
came back; the raven was still sitting at the same place.
"I am totally frozen, and can't get out of here by myself.
You've got to help me."
The raven asked for help, and the fox helped him pull his tail,
but the tail got ripped off. Then the raven said,
"You are going to pull at a breath. Maybe someday you will
think of something for me."
"I will not be able to do that."
"Then I will tell the man with a weed-likehead what you have
done to me."
"I'm not afraid of the man."
"All right. I'll tell him all about you."
After having so said, the raven left and met a man. The reven said,
"The fox made me lose my tail. Please kill him someday."
The man answered.
"I can't kill him. He is very sly."
Next the raven met a bear and said,
"Don't you have any ideas about how to kill the fox?"
The bear answered.
"I can't kill him. You'd better ask the man with the weed-like
head to shoot the fox."
So the raven went to see the man with a weed-like head, saying,
"At last I've come to you."
The man replied.
"I can't shoot the fox either. You could ask others, but it's
not worth it."
The raven met a wolf and said,
"Run as fast as you can and catch the fox."
The wolf answered.
"No matter how fast I run, it is in vain."
"Then what can I do?"
"The hair of your butt grows, right? So don't worry. You
just lost your hair. We lose hair then it grows back."
